(8933) Economic cut
For practical purposes there exists within a one-bank canal section a point on the ground surface that, if the excavation is to balance the embankment, will have the same cut and will be at the same distance from the canal centre line for all ground surface slopes, so long as they are uniform. In other words, for the balanced conditions, all cross-slope lines pass through this point. The cut at this point is called the `economic cut` (illustrated), the point is called the `pivot point`, and the distance from it to the centre line is called the `offset distance` (illustrated).
